Near the peak of this tree is a little eagle\u2019s nest. A pair of these birds has nested here for at least 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>There are over 700 species of eucalyptus. <em>\u201cEucalyptus\u201d<\/em> comes from two Greek words: \u2018Eu\u2019 meaning well and \u2018kalyptos\u2019 meaning covered.\u00a0 It refers to the fruit.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018Gomphocephala\u2019<\/em> also comes from two Greek words: \u2018Gompho\u2019 meaning nail or bolt and \u2018cephala\u2019 meaning head.\u00a0 It refers to the cap on the fruit.<\/p>\n<p>The ages of these trees are approximately 400 years. They can live for up to 500 years.<\/p>\n<p>Two hundred years ago vast forests of tuart, jarrah and marri stretched from Jurien Bay to Busselton. Today, due to clearing and disease, only a quarter of the original tuart forests remain.<\/p>\n<p>Tuarts are the largest trees on the Swan Coastal Plain and remain an important habitat for animals and birds.
