100th Birthday Celebrations for Audrey

On Sunday 24th March, Audrey James celebrated her 100th birthday with a family luncheon. She received numerous letters and telegrams including ones from the Queen, the Governor General, the WA Governor, the Prime Minister and the WA Premier. What an amazing milestone to reach and we were able to continue the celebrations the next day with a morning tea at Lake Karrinyup. Over 60 members and family attended and the bar looked very festive with beautiful table arrangements and colourful balloons.

Audrey first became associated with Lake Karrinyup in 1928 when aged 15, she walked the course with her mother, Daisy Savage (the first Ladies’ Captain of the club) and the club captain, Keith Barker, to work out where to put the ladies’ tees. She became a junior member the next year so has been associated with the club one way or another for 84 years. Audrey was Ladies’ Captain from 1968 to 1970 and Ladies’ President from 1975 to 1977. She played golf on the main course until she was 91. She didn’t want to move across to the Short Course as they were too old over there and anyway, she loved being with the younger ladies as she so enjoyed watching them play! She eventually went across to the Short Course and played there until she was 98 and given half the chance, would still be out there now.

She has been the staunchest and most wonderful supporter of all our pennant teams. Initially she caddied for numerous players and then became our No. 1 supporter and still is. Wherever our teams have played, Audrey has been there with her shooting stick and binoculars cheering on the teams.

 So HAPPY BIRTHDAY Audrey
