The 2013 Pennant Season kicked off on Sunday with all teams playing their first game at home. It was a reasonably successful start with all teams except Division 5 posting a first up win.
Division 2 took to the field with a relatively unchanged line-up from 2012 with Matt Bowra being the only new face having graduated from our junior ranks. A visit from Melville Glades was the first assignment for 2013 and most games were tight throughout. Jules Harris (5/4) and David Bandy (5/3) had comfortable wins while Brendan Milburn, Roger Perrie and Mike Rundus were the other winners. A couple of matches were lost on the 19th but the job had already been done with a 5-4 win recorded. Round 2 will see the team have their first road trip, facing Wanneroo away.
The Juniors also posted a tight win over Melville Glades sneaking home 4-3. Ethan Andrews (6/5) and Joe Owen (7/5) were the most convincing winners playing at 1 &2 while Travis Temm (3/2) and Tip Snowden (4/3) also had strong wins.
In the other divisions, Division 5 were narrowly defeated by Chequers, going down 4-3. Sam Gill, Ken Hellsten and Leon Davies were victorious in their matches.
After a tough 2012 Division 7 started the season in emphatic fashion with a 5 ½ – 1 ½ victory over Sun City. Captain Steve Paisio lead from the front with a 6/5 victory. Greg Baker, Paul Bannan, Ben Robertson and Tim Gattorna also recorded wins while Tristan Kirkham halved his match.
The Division 8 team also started their season against Sun City and were also comfortable winners 6-1. Summer knockout winner Steve Temple continued his good matchplay form easily accounting for his opponent 7/6. The other matches were much tighter however Mark Innes, Stu Phillips, Andy Stone, Tony O’Shea and Oliver Bradshaw.
All teams are away for round 2 but hopefully the winning ways continue.
Best of luck to all sides.
