International Women’s Golf Day

International Women’s Golf Day is a global golf initiative launched in 2016 to introduce women of all ages to the game and encourage existing female golfers to tee it up in a fun and highly inclusive environment.

Thank you to everyone who took part in our celebration of Women’s Golf Day at Lake Karrinyup on Tuesday 6th June 2017. The energy around the club yesterday was one of friendship, memory and laughter and it was lovely to see everyone in red! We started the day with GolfWA’s Billie May running a swing fit class for the Ladies who are currently participating in our 22 week clinic

On the course we had ladies getting into the spirit while donning the red props and taking a ‘selfie’!

The aim is to celebrate everything golf has given us and Sharon Bristow has summarized it to a ‘tee’

“Fran and I discussed our favourite golf moments and we decided it was when we had first started on the main course.  We had started on the back 9 and it  was pouring with rain, there were times when we couldn’t see where the green was but we agreed that we would play on as it was ” a winter sport”

There was a river on the 11th that washed our ball away when we tried to putt through it which made us double up with laughter, we plugged on, unbeknown to us “newbies” we had no idea that you could take relief in a flooded bunker so every time we had to hit out we were covered in mud. I wish I had kept the photos  of our splattered faces. By the time we made it to Tee off at the front 9 there were some men there Teeing off, and full of self-righteousness we told them off and said it was ladies golf day and we were playing in a comp, they told us that the siren had gone off and the whole comp had been called off. We told them we had heard no such thing and played on, making them wait whilst we teed off. As it was, when we finished it had been called off we hadn’t heard the siren (wouldn’t have known what they meant anyway)  I think we actually were placed that day as no one else had finished.

I have met so many interesting and accomplished women during my 2 years at the club.

I love the fact that golf  is a sport that we can play together at all ages and levels. I love that I can play with a person that is 20 years older than me, that  might not hit the ball quite as far, but will still score better than you because (apart from the obvious!) it is not a game that you score on by being the fittest or by brute strength. I have learnt more from these women than any golf lessons that I have had and appreciate their patience and guidance.” – Thank you Sharon!

From the founder of the IWGD Elisa Gaudet

“I am elated and proud that this one-day international event has introduced thousands of new female golfers to the sport and impassioned existing golfers while transcending language, culture, religion, and race to celebrate golf, women and community.”

This day of celebration will continue to grow and each year we hope to use this day to celebrate our friendships, memories and achievements.

Happy golfing Ladies!
