2021 Karrinyup Cup & Club Dinner

The 2021 Men’s Karrinyup Cup took place on Saturday 31st July with 270 members taking their place in the field and an additional 49 on the North Course.

Following the day of golf, over 240 gentlemen in their dinner suits mingled in the bar for pre-dinner drinks prior to being led through to the dining room by our Piper.  This was quite a moment to experience and rather unique too.  Captain Phil Grice thanked the Piper and called on  Committeeman, John Wallace to say Grace.

After a delicious entree, Captain Phil Grice asked members to be upstanding and called on Vice Captain, Stephen Moloney to propose the loyal toast.   Golf presentations then took place with the Captain announcing all prize winners from the day.  David Anderson was a very popular 2021 Karrinyup Cup winner with a nett 67, and back to back winner Jason Falkingham was announced as the winner of the North Course with a nett 60 playing off a 3 handicap.   Both David and Jason gave lovely speeches.  Last year’s Karrinyup Cup winner, Stephen Wetherall, was the A Grade monthly medal winner with a nett 69, Peter Scotford took out B grade with a nett 68 and Greg Baker won the C grade with a nett 71c/b.  Joe Owen won best gross with 69 off the stick.

Main course was served and the quality of the food prepared by the chefs was second to none.   Following dinner, in the absence of our President, Graeme Pepper (who was a last minute apology due to a family illness), the Vice-President, Geoff Anderson took to the lecturn to farewell our General Manager, Damon Lonnie.  Geoff thanked Damon for his all of his achievements during his 11 years of service, and on behalf  the club, presented Damon with honorary membership at Lake Karrinyup.  He also presented Damon with a framed print of our signature hole – an aerial shot of the 8th looking up to the clubhouse.  Following a loud round of applause, Damon responded with a sincere and heartful speech, fondly reflecting on his time as the General Manager.  He also thanked the General Committee, all of the membership and the staff at Lake Karrinyup.  Fond memories and friendships will be with him forever.  The members were upstanding giving a resounding rendition of “for he’s a jolly good fellow” to a very humbled Damon.

Captain Phil called upon Geoff to provide the Toast to Karrinyup after which Geoff acknowledged past Presidents who were in attendance at the dinner –Albert Tognolini (1985 – 1986), Rob Meadows (1993,1994,1995), Barry Barr (2000 – 2001), Jack Oswald (2002 – 2003),  Ian Crockett (2008 – 2009), John Hopkins (2010 – 2011), Chris Carey (2012 – 2013), Jim Crockett (2014 – 2015), John Hanly (2016 – 2017) and Con Barron (2018-2019).  Apologies were received from Ross Walker (1989 – 1990),  Ian Marshall (1996 – 1997) and Peter Davies (2006 – 2007).  This year 8 members reached their 50 years of membership and the 5 in attendance were presented with their ties, after which time they all gave a lovely short speech.  These members were Ian Crockett, John McAlwey, Glen Matyear, Rob Meadows and Leo Seward.  Those who were unable to attend the Club Dinner were Leon Wall, Paul Latham and Leo Seward.

Following the completion of the formalities, the whiskey bar opened and members enjoyed an evening of camaraderie, tradition and friendships!  A selection of photos from the evening can be viewed below.
