2025 MAKK CUP AT THE AUSTRALIAN

The 2025 MAKK Cup was hosted by The Australian Golf Club on 1st – 3rd of May, welcoming friends from Reciprocal Club’s Metropolitan GC, Lake Karrinyup CC & Kooyonga GC.

Since its inception in 2009, the MAKK Cup has evolved into a meaningful forum at which the leaders of each Club can exchange ideas and learn from one another’s experience. The event is played once a year on a rotating basis and celebrates the long-standing relationships between each Club.

Players from the visiting Club’s enjoyed a light lunch and Clubhouse tour on Thursday before a practice round of golf in between rain showers. An opening night dinner was hosted for all participants at Chiswick restaurant in Woollahra that evening.

Round 1 of the tournament was delayed due to torrential downpours on Friday. Play eventually got under way with the format for round 1 reduced from 18 to 9-holes.

Well done to Ben Cribb (The Australian) who recorded the best score with 20 stableford points. The Australian took a 5-point lead over Lake Karrinyup after round 1, with the best 7-scores from the team of 9 to counting towards the team total over two-rounds.

The Club hosted a Jacket & Tie dinner on Friday evening entertaining the players with great food and wine thanks to Head Chef, Elena Pavlova and her staff.

The weather cleared up for round 2 with light winds and fresh pins for the players to take on. Frank Back (The Australian) recorded a fine score of 37-points to climb the individual leaderboard and win the overall prize with 52-points for 27-holes. He edged out Grant Arnold (The Australian) by 1-point. The best overall scores for each visiting Club were Simon Hibbins (Metropolitan GC) with 49-points, Jill Dorrington (Lake Karrinyup) with 47-points & Ross Dillon (Kooyonga) with 47-points.

As has been the trend for this event, the hosting team were victorious with The Australian recording a total of 334-points, winning by 29 over Defending Champions, Kooyonga GC with 305-points. Lake Karrinyup finished with 294-points and Metropolitan recording 280-points.

The home team enjoyed a glass of Red Wine poured from the MAKK Cup, as is the tradition, after a closing lunch in the Clubhouse.

The 2026 edition of the MAKK Cup will travel to Western Australia and be hosted by Lake Karrinyup CC.
