On Friday 30th August, the friends of Breast Cancer Research celebrated 30 years of raising funds for research into this insidious and debilitating disease.
Despite the inclement weather we had a full field of golfers, who rugged up and dressed in wet weather gear, all hit off at 8.00am sharp. We had a hit out hole on the 3rd with a bucket and flag on one of the remaining patches of land in the lake. Our thanks to Jarred who put on his waders and retrieved the balls!
Our golfers were also able to buy “a Piece of Pink String”, all of differing lengths, which could be used to help get out of one of our notorious bunkers, or nearer a pin. Great fun was had by all.
The winners with a massive score of 91points were a team lead by Caro Cunningham. A very popular win, as Caro is the daughter of Jenny Clements who passed away from Breast Cancer and whose close friends at Karrinyup were the originators of the FOBCR committee.
Professor Christobel Saunders whose research is the recipient of funds raised was again our guest speaker. Christobel gave a very informative talk on the massive changes that have occurred in the research and treatment of Breast Cancer over the last 30years.
The lunch was a very happy occasion and we enjoyed a presentation from our own “Golf Bags Plus,” who sang three songs to a wonderfully appreciative audience.
This year we also had a live auction, conducted by Peter Clements, Jenny’s son. The prize was 5 nights accommodation at the family Beach House at Bunker Bay. Bidding was swift with the winning bid at $4,900. This amount helped to contribute to the amazing figure of approximately $40,000 raised on this fabulous day.
A day like this does not happen without amazing Sponsors, Raffle Donors and lots of hard work by a wonderful committee. LKCC has been a generous supporter of this event and we thank all the staff who gave of their time and commitment to making our day such a success.
