Lake Karrinyup will have four competitors in this year’s championship. Young guns and A Grade pennant players Joseph Owen and Ethan Andrews will be competing in their first national championship. Both Joseph and Ethan have shown huge signs of improvement in recent months and will be looking to leave their mark on the event.

The 2014 Club Champion Simon Liddell will compete in his second national championship. The big hitting 26 year old has had a solid first half of the national golfing season and is looking for some high finishes in the coming months to force his way into the 2016 WA Men’s State Team.

Current WA Men’s State Team and Lake Karrinyup Pennant captain Nick Curnow will also travel to Melbourne for the event. The former Victorian will also need some positive results prior to March to maintain his spot in the State Team.

The Australian Men’s Amateur Championship is contested over 36-holes stroke play qualifying, with the leading 64 players progressing to elimination match play. It is open to players of all ages with an initial field size of 234 players. Its history dates back to 1894 when the (Royal) Melbourne Golf Club began holding an annual event known as the Victorian Golf Cup. This then became known as the amateur championship of Australia. After the formation of the Australian Golf Union in 1898, the Amateur Championship of Australia event was held under its auspices and winners of the Victorian Golf Cup were recognised officially to be Australian amateur champions.

Members will see the Lake Karrinyup representatives practicing hard in the coming week at Lake Karrinyup, be sure to wish them luck for the event.
