The weekend of Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th August saw the 2013 edition of the Lake Cup held, a 36 hole nett event which ultimately acts as the qualifying rounds for the Club Championships. Periods wet weather presented some tough conditions on Saturday with only a handful of players bettering their handicap in round one. The highlight of the day was the career best round by Joe Agnello who shot a nett 64 to be the clubhouse leader overnight. An early shower was the only rain present on Sunday however with the fine conditions came stronger winds which kept conditions tough for shooting a low score. Haydn Chrystal broke from the pack shooting a nett 66 to go with his 74 from Saturday to take the clubhouse lead on 140 with a 5 stroke lead over his nearest chaser. As the groups came in this score was not challenged until Tony O’Shea signed for a nett 71, which paired with his 68 from round 1 gave him a 36 hole total of 139 and a 1 shot victory in the Lake Cup.
Winners of the other categories included Paul Hazell (Top Qualifier); Jules Harris (Senior Gross); Joe Agnello (Senior Nett), Kiran Day (Junior) and Greg Pearce (Short Course). The matchplay sector of the championships kicks off this coming Sunday with 18 hole quarter-finals in the morning followed by the semi-finals that afternoon. The 36 hole finals will be held on Sunday 25th August. Congratulations to all those who have qualified and best of the luck for the finals series. Spectators are more than welcome and a reminder that the course will be closed all day both Sundays.
