Men’s Pennant Round 2

All five of Lake Karrinyup men’s pennant teams played at home in round 2 and were determined to make good use of their local knowledge.

The division 8 side led the teams off first with an early morning match against Hartfield. Early on it looked as if the team were on the way to securing a strong win with Andrew O’Neil winning his match 9 & 8 and Oliver Bradshaw winning 8 & 7. When John Brennan finished his match 6 & 5 it seemed as if the home side were marching to victory, however with a few losses and a half in the top order, the match was all of a sudden in doubt. Craig Williams played composed golf throughout the day, an impressive feat considering he had arrived at Hartfield that morning to play and did well to even attend his match. Craig’s half in the final game was enough to secure the division 8 side a 4 to 3 win and got the team’s season back on track.

The division 6 side were also looking to turn their season around after a shaky start away last week. The team performed extremely well with comfortable wins to Captain Steve Paisio, Nick Croston, Rick Malone, Ian Aldridge and also Jay Barron who played at the number 1 position.  Steve Paisio showed exceptional leadership throughout the afternoon and supported the other divisions as they finished.

The division 4 side captained by Mitch Bristow rebounded strongly this week at home after letting one slide last week at Sea View. The team performed strongly across the board winning 6 ½ to 1/2 against The Vines. Mathew Bowra playing at the number one position, made a clutch up and down on the last hole to half his match. The commanding win by the team was enough to make up for last week and now sees the team on top of the table.

The Junior Side played the Vines this week and wanted to validate their strong start last week against Lakelands. The boys showed their talent across the board and cruised to a 6 games to 1 victory. The juniors have a very strong side this year which has been on show the last two weeks, having only dropping two individual matches so far. They will look to keep their outstanding form going this week at Sea View.

The A grade division 2 side have a strong belief this year and wanted to continue their strong start to the season at home. The side saw a few changes this week with Roger Perrie and John Wallace coming into the line up.

Both these players took their opportunities and secured wins for the team. Roger Had an early 4 up lead through 9 holes, and although he battled slightly on the back 9 he had done enough early to secure a 1 up win. John Wallace had a convincing win at the number 7 position winning 5 & 3.

Young up and comer Ethan Andrews and experienced pennant player Stu Jones gave their opponents a clinic winning their matches 5 & 4. Stu’s golf must have had a serious psychological effect on his opponent as he was going to tee off the next hole before Stu informed him the match was over.

John Clancy had a tight match on his hands walking down the 17th hole with a 1 up lead. John calmly disposed of his opponent after rolling in his 30 foot birdie putt to win his match 2 & 1.

Nick Vogel lead all day on route to a solid 2 & 1 win. Nick Curnow won his match the hard way going down extra holes after his match was all square after 18. Nick took his chances on the first extra hole making a fantastic birdie from the greenside bunker to close out an 8 matches to 1 victory for Lake Karrinyup.

This week the side will face Sea View away and will be aiming to maintain their spot on top of the table.

Previous News ….. Men’s Pennant Round 1 – 22nd June

The 2014 Lake Karrinyup Men’s Pennant season kicked off on Sunday the 22nd of June with all divisions playing away.

The division 8 side played at Lakelands and were unlucky to go down to their opponents 4 ½ to 2 ½ . The winners for Lake Karrinyup on the day were the captain Oliver Bradshaw who won 2 & 1 along with Stuart Phillips who won 3 & 2. Wayne Golspink also managed to scrape out a halved match for the team.

The division 6 side travelled out to The Vines on Sunday and unfortunately lost to the home team 5 matches to 2. Pennant debutant Jay Barron got his season off to a good start with a commanding 6 & 4 win. Greg Baker continued his great 2013 form winning his match 2 up. Malcolm Kates also performed well in his reserve match winning 5 & 4.

The division 4 side played against Sea View Golf Club and went down narrowly to the home team 4 matches to 3. Young up and comer Mathew Bowra had a strong 4 & 3 win at the number 2 position. Alan Tear and Greg Bandy also added to the win tally with their matches never in doubt. Although the team was disappointed not to get over the line, the guys showed some good fight at a course where local knowledge is a significant advantage.

The 2014 junior pennant side got their season off to a commanding start closing out the Lakelands juniors 6 matches to 1. The team this year is loaded with young talent which was demonstrated on Sunday. The juniors must have not liked the final 3 holes with almost every match being won early. After a great start, the team will look to build on this throughout the year. Congratulations to the whole team on a fantastic effort.

The division 2 side opened their season away against Lakelands. The team have been building towards round one and were determined to get their season off to a flying start away.

First out for Lake Karrinyup was Tony King who got the team of to a great start with an imposing 5 & 4 win. David Bandy gave the team even more confidence overcoming his opponent (who provided his own running commentary of the match all day) 3 & 1. Ethan Andrews playing at number 7 ran into a player who had a day out and eventually fell 5 & 4. Ethan is a young up and coming member and will feature in the A grade side for years to come. New Lake Karrinyup members Todd Gault and Jon Clancy fought hard all day however could not quite get over the line in their matches.

When Nick Vogel accounted for his opponent 4 & 2 at the number 4 position the contest sat at 3 games apiece.

Lake Karrinyup veteran Stu Jones had fought back from being 4 down early in his match and was looking like going down to the wire.

Team captain Nick Curnow took his recent good form into the pennant season winning his match at the number 1 position 3 & 2. This result meant that the team needed Simon Liddell or Stu Jones to get over the line.  Stu Jones produced a brilliant 18th hole to go down extra holes against his opponent.  With the match in the balance Simon Liddell produced some solid golf closing his opponent out on the 17th hole and giving Lake Karrinyup the win.  With the win secured Stu Jones’ opponent made a brilliant birdie on the first extra hole to win the match. It was a great fight back by Stu who looked as though he may be down and out early.

Next week all teams will be playing at home from 7:30am. It would be great to see lots of Lake Karrinyup members out supporting our pennant teams.
