Karrinyup Cup & Club Dinner

The Karrinyup Cup, one of the biggest days on the Lake Karrinyup Country Club calendar was played on Saturday the 26th of July. There was a great deal of anticipation for this event as it always proves to be one of the most memorable days of the year. A strong field of 233 members took place in the event which is a stroke event. In order to be eligible to claim the Karrinyup Cup the player must be in attendance that night at the Club Dinner.

The morning field faced some interesting conditions with rain and wind playing a major factor. After a heavy down pour play was suspended for around 15 minutes with a number of the greens being unplayable due to being under water. However Lake Karrinyup displayed how good the greens respond to heavy rain with play being back under way after only 15 minutes allowing the morning field to complete their round.

Better conditions met the afternoon players with a few light showers having minimal effect on the scoring. The competition prize winners were announced that night at the black tie Club Dinner. The major prizes included the presentation of mugs to the winners of their respective grades who were David Evans (A Grade) Graeme Hoad (B Grade) and Robert Mateljan (C Grade). Another notable performance on the day was a fantastic hole in 1 by Daryl Muir on the 8th hole which was celebrated in the bar prior to the dinner.

The winner of the Karrinyup Cup on an excellent score of nett 68 was David Evans who wins his second Karrinyup Cup with his previous win in the event coming in 1996.

The Club Dinner is a traditional black tie event which follows the day’s golf in the dining room. As one of the great club traditions, the men were lead from the festivities in the main bar into the exquisite looking dining room by a piper who finishes off the performance with amazing grace.

The club dinner is an event which attracts a great number of previous club presidents and previous winners who are honoured throughout the night. The club also pays tribute to any members who are in their 50th year of membership. This year we acknowledged the achievement of Mr Andrew McGlew who joined Lake Karrinyup back in 1963. Mr McGlew made a very entertaining speech about his time at Lake Karrinyup and what the club means to him, this was met by warm applause. He was then presented his well-earned 50 year club tie by President Jim Crockett.

The Whiskey bar was a huge success this year with a congregation forming around it for most of the night. The camaraderie between members is evident on nights like this which contributed to the great atmosphere throughout the room. This along with the traditions which are still important to members today are what makes Lake Karrinyup one of Australia’s premiere golf clubs and nights such as the club dinner so successful.
