The 2014 Lake Cup was contested over 18 holes on back to back days on Saturday the 9th and Sunday the 10th.
Up until and including 1948, the Lake Karrinyup Cup had been the trophy awarded to the player topping the qualifiers in the Club Championship. It was then decided that the Karrinyup Cup become an 18 hole event followed by the Club Dinner, an event which was held late last month.
After 1949 The Lake Cup became the trophy played for over 36 holes qualifying for the Club Championships and is now awarded to the Best Nett score over those 36 holes.
The event turned on some fantastic sunny weather for the 205 participants which led to some fantastic round 1 scoring. At the completion of Saturday’s round, 1 Nick Panos was sitting atop the leader board with a fantastic round of nett 68. However there were an abundance of players snapping at his heels and looking to make up ground on Sunday.
Sunday was a day where players were looking to either build on their solid opening rounds or alternatively were looking to make up some ground after their opening round left them some work to do in order to qualify for the match play of their respective grade. Many players improved on their opening round throughout the day with some exceptional golf being played. Hal Mulder posted the round of the day with an unbelievable nett 65.
Azer Pehlic matched his solid opening round of 74 off the stick on day 2, this saw him finish as the 2014 Lake Karrinyup Junior Champion. Unfortunately Azer is unavailable to play in the match play section of the Club Championship this year as he has to represent WA in the school boy championships in Queensland. At 15 years of age Azer is sure to feature in a number of championships to come.
There was a great battle amongst those players vying to make the top 8 gross qualifiers who qualify for the Club Championship. After day 1 Roger Perrie and Nick Curnow were tied for top spot after posting matching even par 72’s. The top 8 contest was very tight with 8 players posting a score of 75 or better on day 1. Sunday was a case of doing whatever was necessary to make the top 8 qualifiers. New member and A grade pennant representative Todd Gault put a disappointing first round 82 behind him and posted the round of the event with a 2 under 70 off the stick. For some other players it was a case of trying to hold on to their position from round 1. At the completion of play on day 2, John Wallace sat atop the gross leaderboard with consistent rounds of 73 and 74 for a 3 over 147 totals to be the top qualifier (and Senior Champion).
The 8 players who will battle it out for the 2014 Club championship over the coming Sundays are; John Wallace, Nick Curnow, Alex McKay, Todd Gault, Simon Liddell, Matt Bowra, Mike Lekias and Stuart Jones.
The Lake Cup was also a tight finish with Michael Clarke taking out the event with an excellent 141 total after rounds of nett 71 and nett 70. Overnight leader Nick Panos finished runner up, one shot back.
The Short Course event saw Toni Lucev as a runaway winner with a 2 round total of 117.
