The Sacred Kingfisher is a tree Kingfisher, and migrates into southern Australia for the summer breeding season. It frequents open forest, woodland, and wetlands. It hunts from an exposed perch, and much like a hawk waits for prey to pass. Prey includes small reptiles, large insects, and small fish.

Once a pair has mated, it digs a nest burrow in a river bank or makes a nest in a hollow of a branch. Eggs 5.
